Arrangement
In two rows of 4 - proximal and distal rows
Proximal row : Pisiform, Triquetral, Lunate, Scaphoid
Distal row : Trapezium, Trapezoid, Capitate, Hamate

Ligaments
These small bones are closely fitted together and held in position by ligaments
Proximal row : articulates in the wrist joint
Distal row : articulates with the metacarpals - carpometacarpal joints
Tendons of muscles lying in the forearm cross the wrist
These tendons are held close to the bones by strong fibrous bands calle retinacula
Movements
The range of movements in the joints of the carpal bones is very small
