       Emerge from the lower surface of the brain and pass through the foramina in               the skull

       I, II, VIII - sensory
       III, IV ,V, XI and XII - motor
       V, VII, IX and X are - mixed

Situations of nuclei or Origins of Cranial Nerves

Cerebral Cortex
1st Cranial nerve - Olfactory nerve - sensory - sense of smell

2nd Cranial nerve - Optic nerve - sensory - nerve of sight

Midbrain
3rd Cranial nerve - Oculomotor nerve - motor - eye ball movement, lid movement, pupillary constriction lens accommodation

4th Cranial nerve - Trochlear nerve - motor - superior oblique - movement of the eyeball downward and outward

Pons
5th Cranial nerve - Trigeminal nerve - mixed nerve - both motor and sensory - facial sensation and mastication

6th Cranial nerve - Abducent nerve - motor nerve - motor - lateral rectus - moves the eyeball laterally

7th Cranial nerve - Facial nerve - mixed nerve - facial expression - salivation - taste

8th Cranial nerve - Vestibulocochlear nerve - sensory nerve - hearing and equilibrium

Medulla oblongata
9th Cranial nerve - Glossopharyngeal nerve - mixed nerve - sensation and taste in the pharynx and the tongue, supplies the pharyngeal muscles

10th Cranial nerve - Vagus nerve - mixed nerve - supplies larynx, pharynx, soft palate, thoracic and abdominal viscera

11th Cranial nerve - Spinal accessory nerve - motor nerve - supplies sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles

12th Cranial nerve - Hypoglossal nerve - supplies the tongue - movement of the tongue
