Danger Area of Face
Definition
Danger area or triangle of the face consists of the area from the corners of the mouth to the bridge of the nose, including the nose and maxilla.
Peculiarity of the veins of the nose area
The facial vein communicates with the cavernous sinus inside the cranium via the ophthalmic vein.
The veins of the face and head do not have one way valves. Therefore blood can flow away from skull and exit the face inferiorly or flow back into the skull to be drained via the internal jugular vein. This bidirectional flow is the cause for "danger". Any infection within the danger triangle may enter the blood stream and pass into the brain causing meningitis or cavernous sinus thrombosis. (CVT)
