Definition
o A pear shaped sac attached to the posterior surface of the liver by connective tissue
o Stores and concentrates bile

o Hartman's pouch (infundibulum)
o Cystic duct
Structure
o Peritoneum
o Covers only the inferior surface
o Gall bladder is in contact with the posterior surface of the the liver
o Muscle layer - oblique
o Mucous membrane - rugae - disappear when full
Blood Supply
o Cystic artery, a branch of hepatic artery
o Venous drainage by the cystic vein → portal vein
Nerve supply
o Sympathetic nerves fibres from the sympathetic chain in the abdomen
o Parasympathetic from vagus
Functions of Gall Bladder
o Stores bile
o Secretes mucus
o Absorbs water - concentrates bile by 10 to 15 times
o Releases bile when needed
o Contraction and release of bile stimulated by cholecystokinin from duodenum
o Presence of fat and acid chyme in the duodenum
