The Interior of the Heart
Chambers
4 Chambers
Two atria
Two ventricles
Partitioned by the septum - consisting of myocardium lined by endocardium - right and left
Partitioned by valves - into upper atrium and lower ventricle - atrioventricular valves - mitral valve on the left and tricuspid valve on the right
Structure
Interior lined by endocardium - a thin, smooth, glistening membrane - it peermits smooth flow of blood inside the heart. - made of flattened epithelial cells
Valves : cup like structures called cusps - two in mitral valve (left) and three in tricuspid valve (right)
The cusps of the valves are tethered by chordae tendinae to the papillary muscles
The opening into the aorta is guarded by aortic valve
The opening into the pulmonary artery is guarded by pulmonary valve
Applied anatomy
Papillary muscles - affected by infarction - valve not tethered well by chordae tendinae - valve prolapses into the atrium - regurgitation
Sub endocardial infarction
Atrial septal defect
Ventriclar septal defect
