Long Bone
Parts of Long Bone
Diaphysis or shaft
Two epiphyses or extremities
The diaphysis and epiphysis are separated by epiphyseal cartilages
Medullary canal
Bone marrow
Structure
Diaphysis - composed of compact bone
Medullary canal - contains bone marrow - yellow marrow and red marrow
Epiphysis consists of an outer covering of compact bone with cancellous bone inside.
Long Bone Growth
Bone grows in length by ossification of the diaphyseal surface of epiphyseal cartilages
The growth is completed when the cartilage is completely ossified and stop growing
Centres of ossification = concentrations of osteogenic cells - present in the diaphysis and epiphysis - ossification begins in these centres
Growth in thickness is by deposition of bone under the periosteum
Blood Supply
By a branch from one of the nearest arteries - called nutrient artery
