The vertebral artery
Branch of the first part of the subclavian artery.
Travels through the foramina in the transverse processes of all the cervical vertebrae except the seventh.cervical vertebra
Turns behind the lateral mass of the atlas, enters the skull through the foramen magnum
At the lower border of the pons joins the vessel of the oppostie side to form the basilar artery .
It gives off spinal branches which enter the vertebral canal through the intervertebrl foramina.
Each spinal branch divides into two branches. Of these one passes along the roots of the nerves to supply the spinal cord;
The right and the left vertebral arteries join to form basilar artery thereby forming the vertebral system of blood supply to the brain
